Some couples are advised to obtain couples counseling prior to marriage. Its a good way to ascertain the couple’s dynamic and do some preventative work on their communication skills. Such was the case of Larry and Gail, who were both in their early 20’s and soon to be wed.

After several sessions of couples counseling, Gail had this to say:

I am so grateful we attended couples therapy prior to our big day. Truth be told, I was getting worried about us. I knew we were under a lot of pressure with the the wedding day ahead of us, but we had never argued so much. It seemed like we were both getting on each other’s nerves constantly! I kept thinking – in the back of my mind – is this what its going to be like after we get married? If so, I was definitely having second thoughts.

The counselor recognized the pressure the couple was under and worked on ways to connect the two in a more fundamental and essential manner. He achieved this through relaxation exercises and dynamic exercises where the two would recall the reasons they had come together in the first place. The couples counselor also worked on more solid communication skills so they could problem solve quickly and effectively. After only a few sessions, the couple felt more relaxed and strengthened in their choice to be with one another. And to approach their upcoming wedding day with a sense of joy and calm, not stress!
