Many people ask for a better understanding of a healthy marriage, and that isn’t a surprise considering much of what makes a healthy marriage is what makes it healthy for you. For some couples, a passionate and heated marriage is absolutely necessary, but for others the mark of a good marriage is a quiet and supportive atmosphere. It is all relative. For those who are looking for a sort of litmus test on marriage health, however, some generalizations can be made.
Here are some good ideas on what goes into a healthy marriage.
A healthy marriage is one that:
- Finds support and confidence in one another
- Is able to live within the financial means
- Engages in healthy activities
- Communicates both positive and negative in a non-hurtful manner
- Has individual as well as joint interests
- Has realistic hopes and goals
- Shares in the decision making process
- Has respect for each other
In a healthy marriage, each person is getting what they need from their partner, as well as supplying what their partner needs. It is important to remember, however, that you cannot depend on your partner for everything. You must find meaning and fulfillment in yourself as an individual as well as a partner.
No one set of marriage rules will ever apply to every relationship. In truth, there is no set of marriage rules at all. The above list could apply to any relationship and perhaps that is what makes it so important. Every relationship should be able to build upon a foundation of respect and communication. A marriage adds love into the boundaries of that relationship to bring it to the next level.
