The first year of marriage is often a challenging and exciting time for couples. Many couples, especially those falling into the younger age brackets, naturally assume that their new marriage will simply be an extension of their dating experience, with all of the ups and downs, a few extra bills and a lot more freedom. These are usually the same couples that experience a dearth of confusion, anxiety and surprise when the first year of the marriage turns out dramatically different then the way they had envisioned it. Many people, at this point in their relationship, find that couples therapy is a surprising and much needed resource. Counseling can help navigate the new waters of a beginning marriage.

Many couples don’t expect the differences that naturally evolve in the unique situations that are dating lives and married lives. The new level of commitment in marriage brings to the foreground bigger questions that many couples are simply not prepared to face together yet. These questions can be based in finance, the future, children, lifestyle and daily obligations, whereas dating, for the most part, involved less concrete plans for the future. Dating and living together offered a certain sense of “now” and not “future” that is often comforting and simpler. Once the focus of the relationship changes with marriage, the couple themselves can unravel.

A new marriage can bring many anxieties and dilemmas to the forefront, but a happy, healthy couple can result from the willingness to face those issues in couples therapy.
